1. Motivate students to read for enjoyment and information using fiction and
non-fiction resources.
2. Develop a knowledge of basic vocabulary words commonly encountered in social
studies, English, and general content areas.
3. Develop a knowledge of vocabulary words commonly encountered on standardized
aptitude and achievement tests, and specific strategies for scoring higher on
such tests.
4. Develop reading comprehension skills for English, social studies, science,
and literature reading material to enable students to score well on the reading
sections of the HSPT, MEAP, MAT, PSAT, SAT, ACT, and Advanced Placement Tests.
5. Develop increased competence in both basic paragraph writing skills and
extended composition writing skills in narration, exposition, description,
argumentation.
6. Provide appropriate practice in sentence construction skills and rhetoric in
preparation for passing the ACT and SAT English usage tests.
7. Teach students specific study techniques to enable them to learn more
efficiently and remember more completely the knowledge they are to master.
8. Teach students effective test taking techniques.
9. Encourage positive, appropriate, productive attitudes and values towards
education, school, attendance, reading and writing, interpersonal relationships,
wise decision making, and careful planning for present and future success.
10. Give students adequate composition practice. Seek to get all students to
write well enough to earn a "3" or "4" on all three parts of the High School
Proficiency Test in Writing.
11. Give students extensive practice in the interpretation of poetry.
12. Introduce students to a specific body of literature.
13. Give students the opportunity to read and respond to significant books.
14. Teach students to be well organized for this course by having them keep a
careful notebook of reference information.
